Dine, Dash, Drive

OCEAN CITY, MD - David A. Matias, 18, of Millersville, Md., was in Worcester County Circuit Court this week facing first-degree assault charges and a host of other charges stemming from an incident last March when he compounded a first mistake with a series of even worse offenses in a bizarre sequence of events that ended with him running over a busboy on Coastal Highway after driving with the victim clinging to the hood of his car for three blocks.

Matias and three other individuals came into the Embers earlier that night and each ordered the buffet, running up a dinner tab totaling over $150. When the four skipped out of the restaurant without paying, a small group of employees went out to the parking lot to help their co-worker retrieve the money.

One of the employees - a busboy - stood in front of Matias vehicle, preventing it from leaving. Matias first stopped his Mitsubishi Lancer in front of the busboy, then sped up and raced toward him, hitting the victim and flipping him up on the hood of the vehicle.

According to police reports, the victim held on and pleaded with Matias to stop the vehicle as it sped down Coastal Highway. Roughly three blocks later, the windshield wiper the victim was clinging to finally gave way, launching the victim in front of the vehicle. Matias then ran over the victim's arm and continued to drive. He was arrested a short time later with a myriad of traffic offenses.

"Let's Play Speed Bump !!"

It's always sad when a 2-year-old child is run over by a car (unless, of course, the car is being driven by clowns. Then it's kinda funny, what with the brightly colored wigs, the big floppy shoes, the "Doot-Doot-Ooddle-Ooddle" music...man, that was a great film in drivers education...mmmm...) Anyway, it's sad. And a little weird when the car is being driven by an 8-year-old (which is why we don't let 8-year-old children drive without a parent's permission)

How does such a wacky turn of events take place ? Well, their aunt was "looking after them" (ie: lying down on the couch instead of watching the five children entrusted to her care) and failed to noticed two of the girls screwing around with her white Oldsmobile. A loud "BANG" later, and the 2-year-old boy had "tire marks across his chest" He was later transported to a nearby hospital.

Where there might have been CLOWNS !! "Doot-Doot-Ooddle-Ooddle..."

Don't Let The Bedbugs Bite

ATLANTA -- After waking up one night in sheets teeming with tiny bugs, Josh Benton couldn't sleep for months and kept a flashlight and can of Raid with him in bed.

"We were afraid to even tell people about it at first," Benton said of the bedbugs in his home. "It feels like maybe some way your living is encouraging this, that you're living in a bad neighborhood or have a dirty apartment."

Absent from the United States for so long that some thought they were a myth, bedbugs are back. Entomologists and pest control professionals are reporting a dramatic increase in infestations throughout the country, and no one knows exactly why. Bedbugs are tiny brownish, flattened insects that feed exclusively on the blood of animals and humans. Their bites may cause itchy red welts or swelling.

The National Pest Management Association, which represents many of the country's pest control companies, says the number of bedbug reports have increased fivefold in four years. The Atlanta branch of pest-control firm Terminix saw no cases of bedbugs in 2004 and only three or four last year. But in the first six months of this year, they've had 23 new cases, said Clint Briscoe, a spokesman.

Experts are not entirely sure what has caused the marked increase. Some speculate that increased immigration may be partially to blame.

Girl Scouts Gone Wild

It's always a fearful moment when parents wave goodbye to their daughters as they head off to summer camp; a multitude of questions, such as "Will she write often ? Will she make friends ? How likely is she to be exposed to a vial disease that's incurable once symptoms appear ?"

Yes, when you think potentially deadly pathogens, you're thinking about the Girl Scouts (or maybe that's just me) Over 950 young girls are being urged to get rabies shots after spending a fun-filled summer at "Camp Helluva Lot Of Bats Sleeping Above Your Bed" None of the girls have tested positive for the disease as of yet (but there's always hope)

Really bad day: 16-year-old driver Jacqueline Cossairt was driving in Ossian, Indiana, when her SUV slammed into a tree filled with "tens of thousands of angry honey bees"

Rescue workers donned full safety gear to reach Cossairt, whose car was "engulfed" by a black, hissing swarm of the insects. Cossairt suffered two broken legs, multiple bee stings, and was transported to a nearby hospital.

"[Bees] don't like to be jostled," remarked one local bee expert.

Adorable Lil' Head Injury

MENOMONIE, Wis. (AP) - You may have to look twice, but yes, that's a baby water-skiing on Tainter Lake in western Wisconsin. Twenty-two-month-old Cole Marsolek of Menomonie took up water-skiing last Wednesday on a training ski. Since then he has skied everyday and only fell once, said his mother, Lissa Marsolek.

"He absolutely loves it," Lissa said. "He popped right up the first time. He is a little showboat, waving to everyone and blowing kisses at people as we go by."

When asked what the boy wants to do, he says, "Ski, please." He also is able to say "fall," and when asked if he is ready to ski he says, "Go," his mother said.

The couple also has a 5-month-old daughter, Kinsey, but she hasn't started skiing yet.
